Dr. Venessa Brown and the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, in conjunction with the men's basketball team, established a Faculty Mentoring Athletes program. Within this program, a faculty member serves as a mentor to student-athletes.
"Dr. Venessa Brown is a visionary, and her faculty-mentor program has been a major asset to our program. This concept is the first of its kind that I've been associated with. She pairs our players with one or two tenured faculty or staff members from SIUE's campus community each year. The guidance and expertise they've been able to provide our guys with is invaluable."
-Jon Harris, SIUE Head Coach
“Dr. Brown played a significant role in all four of my years at SIUE. She was our biggest supporter off the court and on the court as well. Not only did she want us to succeed on the basketball court, she wanted us to exceed and dominate in every aspect of our life. Dr. Brown is a living example of excellence and I am grateful for the positive impact she had on my life.”
-Kris Davis, former Cougar guard, Class of 2015
The program is designed to support SIUE student-athletes on and off the court. The focus is on the student-athlete's academic priorities while helping each mentee manage academic success and athletic competition, before, during, and after the basketball season.
