MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Four SIUE golfers remain in the top 15 as SIUE golf slipped to second place after the second round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tuesday.
The Cougars shot 289 and are at 571 (-5) overall with the third round on tap for Wednesday. Eastern Kentucky leapfrogged SIUE with a 283 in Tuesday's second round. The Colonels are at 569 (-7) for the tournament. Tennessee Tech moved up two slots to third place. The Golden Eagles are at 574 (-2). Jacksonville State is fourth at 577 (+1).
"We played the first 11 or 12 holes excellent," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "The guys came to play. We proved we have it in us."
Luke Long maintained his spot in third place. He shot a 71 Tuesday and is at 140 (-4). He is five strokes behind leader Chris Seals of Tennessee Tech who is nine-under par. UT Martin's Hunter Richardson is at 139 (-5). EKU's Noah Combs and Jacksonville State's Bobby Hayes also are tied with Long.
Also for the Cougars, Brady Dixon is tied for seventh at 142. Conor Dore sits at 143 and is ninth. Danny Gorman is tied for 15th at 146. Kyle Slattery took three strokes off his score and moved up four spots into a tie for 34th.
"The guys know that they can do this," Brown said. "They are confident in themselves and confident in their teammates."
The Cougars will tee off for the final round at 10:30 Wednesday morning at the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals.
"We're two back of the leaders going into the final round," Brown added. "That's a good place to make a charge from."
