MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – SIUE golf earned its best finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, taking third place. The Cougars finished four strokes back of OVC Champion Jacksonville State.
The Cougars finished at 870. Jacksonville State was at 866. Eastern Kentucky finished second at 867.
I couldn't be more proud of how we battled with two very good teams in Jacksonville State and Eastern Kentucky," SIUE Head Coach Derrick Brown said. "We peaked at the right time. We just came up a little short."
SIUE's previous best finish was sixth place in 2014.
Individually, Luke Long and Conor Dore led the way for the Cougars. They tied for fourth at 216 (E). The 216 and the fourth-place finish are both individual bests for an SIUE golfer at the OVC Tournament.
Long and Dore each earned a spot on the OVC's All-Tournament team by virtue of their finish.
"To have two guys, a freshman and a sophomore, on the all-tournament team is just awesome," Brown said.
"All five guys contributed in the tournament," Brown added.
Jacksonville State's Bobby Hayes and UT Martin Hunter Richardson's tied for medalist honors at 212 (-4). Since Hayes will play with Jacksonville State in the NCAA Regional, therefore Richardson earns the OVC's individual bid.
SIUE finished the regular season with four consecutive top-four finishes before leading into the OVC Tournament.
"I think all of them realize how good of a year and a spring we had," Brown said. "To finish in the top four of seven of our 11 tournament this year is a testament to the guys. We have the whole group coming back so we should continue to improve."
