SIUE (1-3-0) vs.
Sat., Sept. 9, 7 p.m.
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Coming off a Monday home win over Memphis, SIUE men's soccer remains home to face Valparaiso Saturday at Korte Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
The Cougars are 1-3-0 after the win. Valparaiso comes in at 2-1-1, with both wins coming away from home.
"We've had a really good week of training," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "It was obviously great to get a result (Monday) and to play well. We have had an opportunity to reflect and talk about what we did well and what we need to get better on."
SIUE's win followed three straight one-goal losses to open the season, including two against nationally-ranked opponents.
"It's still about us at this point," Sanchez said. "We need to continue to refine who we are on both sides of the ball."
The Crusaders are coming off of two straight road wins at Loyola and DePaul.
"They have some very talented kids up top," Sanchez said. "They are well organized. I am looking forward to it. It will be a good soccer game and another good opportunity for us to challenge ourselves."
The Cougars and Crusaders have met only one other time, last season at Korte Stadium. That game ended in a scoreless draw.
Following Saturday's contest, SIUE returns to the road for three straight away from Edwardsville.
"I'd like to feel like we have some momentum right now but more because of what we did this week in training," Sanchez added. "The guys understand and value what we do in practice and see how it relates to a good performance on game day. We have to grow the momentum and a lot of that comes through training and through good habits."
