EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE men's soccer has three regular season games remaining beginning with a Mid-American Conference match Saturday at Northern Illinois. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
SIUE (6-7-1 overall, 1-1-0 MAC) is coming off a scoreless draw against IUPUI Wednesday.
"What I like is how disciplined we were," Sanchez said. "There have been games in the past where we have had control, lose our shape a little bit and give up a silly goal. We did a really good job of being disciplined, being organized, and we continued to create chances."
The Cougars recorded a season-high 23 shots in the double-overtime tie.
"We always want to score," Sanchez said. "But we got the shutout, and we really didn't allow (IUPUI) to do much."
Northern Illinois (3-8-1, 0-1-1 MAC) is winless (0-5-1) in its last six games. Sanchez believes the Huskies will mirror IUPUI defensively.
"IUPUI did a good job of getting numbers behind the ball," Sanchez said. "I would anticipate Northern Illinois is going to be similar. We have to find a way to break them down. We want to be just a little more aggressive."
The game at Northern Illinois is the first of three consecutive MAC games to close out the regular season for SIUE. Two of those games are away from Korte Stadium.
"We know every one is going to be a battle," Sanchez said. "It's an exciting time."
Sanchez added that he believes the Cougars are in a good place going into the final three games.
"I am happy with what we've done over the last six or seven games," he said. "We're getting better every single day. The key, as we continue these last few weeks, is to keep getting better and focus on ourselves. We can't lose sight of what we've done well."
