EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE has back-to-back days of events starting with its first home dual match of 2018 against the Buffalo Bulls.
Match time is 7 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center. The Cougars enter the weekend 2-7.
SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates also announced that Saturday's scheduled dual match in Springfield, Illinois, at the Bank of Springfield Center against Northern Illinois has evolved into a triangular meet with The Citadel being added to the mix.
This is a make-up event for SIUE and The Citadel, which were supposed to meet Jan. 7 at the Vadalabene Center. Weather conditions and travel issues caused that match to be cancelled.
"We'll have three good dual meets this weekend, and we'll see where we are at," said Spates.
Having more time to prepare for Buffalo gave Spates and his coaching staff an opportunity to steer the team back to a normal practice rhythm.
"We definitely got some good training in," said Spates. "We were able to concentrate on the things we needed to work on. It was a good week of training."
Buffalo enters Friday's match with a 4-4 record overall and a 2-0 record in the Mid-American Conference.
"Buffalo has a tough squad. They always come to wrestle hard," said Spates.
Kyle Akins leads the Bulls at 125 pounds. An NCAA qualifier last season, he holds a 12-6 record this season. Bryan Lantry, also an NCAA qualifier last season at 133 pounds, has a 9-4 overall record.
SIUE's triangular in Springfield features the Cougars' first Southern Conference match of the season. The Bulldogs sport a 1-4 dual record. The Citadel's most recent dual match was a pair of back-to-back losses to Hofstra and Penn back on Dec. 3.
Northern Illinois is aiming for its first victory of the season and currently stands at 0-4.
The duals in Springfield are being held in conjunction with the Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation's Jon Davis Kids Open.
