EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE women's tennis fared well in the first round of the SIUE Fall Invite with wins in the singles and doubles tournaments.
The day started off with the A doubles tournament where SIUE won two of four matchups. In the quarterfinals the duo of Morgan Steffes and Lara Tupper topped Bradley 7-5. Ann-Christine Link and Raillane Kamdem of SIUE lost in the quarterfinals but came back strong with a win in the consolation quarterfinals over Western Illinois.
In the B doubles tournament, Callaghan Adams teamed up with Alba Salinas of Saint Louis. Adams and Salinas lost in the quarterfinals but defeated Victoria Gonzalez (Bradley) and Cary Milanes (Western Illinois) 7-6 on the consolation side.
Steffes, who headed SIUE's efforts in the A singles tournament, defeated Stella Cliffe of Eastern Illinois in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Link and Adams played in the B flight. Link topped Srishta Slaria of EIU in three sets 6-1, 6-7, 15-13 and Callaghan Adams was defeated by Courtney Lubbers of WIU 3-6, 3-6. In C singles, Tupper and Kamdem participated for SIUE. Tupper won in two sets and Kamdem lost in three sets.
"I know we learned some things today," Mueller added. "We look forward to day two of our home invite."
The doubles tournament finals games will start on Saturday at 8 a.m. with the singles matches to follow.
