EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – SIUE wrestling kicks off the 2019-20 season with a road dual meet Friday at Chattanooga.
"Going out early, we want to see where we are as a team," said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. "We've been looking really good in the (practice) room. This is the most talented team we have had."
This trip for the Cougars originally was going to be a double dual with Presbyterian, but roster injuries for the Blue Hose caused a change in the schedule.
That means SIUE's dual against former Southern Conference rival Chattanooga is now set for 3:30 p.m. CT at Miller Park near Chattanooga's campus.
Spates has three returning NCAA qualifiers aiming for their first start of the season. Tyshawn Williams, at 149 pounds, achieved it two seasons ago while Justin Ruffin, at 157 pounds, and Colton McKiernan, at heavyweight, appeared at the national championships last season.
Williams is ranked sixth in the Mid-American Conference in preseason rankings. McKiernan is picked second in his weight class.
More than half of SIUE lineup will be new faces to Cougar fans.
