Cougars Upset Redhawks in OVC Semifinal

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –The fourth-seeded Cougars upended the top-seeded Redhawks 2-1 in the semifinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Friday.

SIUE will face Belmont for the OVC Championship Sunday at 2 p.m. at Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau.

"We really battled at a high level tonight," SIUE Head Coach Derek Burton said. "It wasn't always pretty and that's to SEMO's credit. They really make you work and there is a reason they won the regular season."

The Redhawks outshot the Cougars 18-8.

Of the eight shots for the Cougars, four of those were on frame, while two found the back of the net.

MacKenzie Litzsinger struck first for the Cougars right before the half at the 41-minute mark. Litzsinger's goal gave the Cougars the advantage going into halftime.

The next goal for the team came from Megan Keeven off a corner kick. Keeven's goal gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage with 22 minutes left in regulation.

The Redhawks responded at minute 85 off a penalty kick that resulted in a goal from Hailey Block.

In goal for the Cougars, Jensen Schoch ended the evening with nine saves and a win for the team.

Burton said the team will be ready for Sunday.

"To beat the No. 1 seed on their field in a semifinal is a major task and a great accomplishment for this team," he said. "We'll enjoy getting that done tonight but the ultimate task will be Sunday and we are going to get ourselves ready to go immediately."
