NORMAN, Okla.—Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's tennis competed at the ITA Central Regionals hosted by the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
The Cougars carried out a strong showing in singles play finishing with an overall 7-5 record for the tournament.
Melissa Vizcardo opened up the tournament by winning two rounds of qualifying singles. Vizcardo defeated Cassie McKenzie of Saint Louis 6-4, 6-4 before taking down Shelby King of Arkansas State University 6-2, 6-0. The win over King qualified Vizcardo for the regional main draw.
In main draw play, Vizcardo fell to Laura Rijkers of Arkansas 6-4, 6-1. Vizcardo finished off the tournament with a dominating consolation win over Kaede Amano.
Jill Lambrechts continued the Cougars strong main draw play by defeating Riddhi Shamara of UMKC 6-2, 6-2. In the next round, Lambrechts faced seeded Luniuska Delgado of Kansas. Lambrechts dropped the first set 3-6 but rallied back to take the second set 6-4. Lambrechts jumped to a 2-1 lead in the third before falling 2-6.
"This was a great event for our team to step up and compete against tremendous competition," commented Head Tennis Coach Adam Albertsen. "I am really proud of how this group has continued to get better and really push each other on the court. ITA Regionals was filled with positive momentum that we need to continue to build off of going into the spring season."
The Cougars have closed out the fall season and will return to action on Sunday, January 26 when they host Chicago State University at the Edwardsville YMCA.
