SIUE Rolls in Title Matchup vs. Lewis

         The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team showed it belongs in the championship game.
         The Cougars, 38-14, won their third straight game and are headed for a showdown with top-seeded Lewis University. SIUE eliminated Southern Indiana early 5-2 and later dumped Missouri-St. Louis 6-2. SIUE must sweep a doubleheader from Lewis on Sunday to walk away as conference champions.
         Missy Koenig, a freshman pitcher from Mapleton, recorded her fourth victory of the tournament as she scattered five hits in the victory over Southern Indiana and picked up the win in relief against Missouri-St. Louis. Koenig is now 15-6 for the season with a team-leading 1.60 earned run average.
         Erin Newman (Fairfield, Calif.) got the Cougars started over Southern Indiana. She blasted her GLVC-leading 17th homer of the season, a solo shot off Southern Indiana starter-loser Katie Roberts, a fellow GLVC first team selection.
         SIUE scored two more in the fourth on leadoff, back-to-back homers from Kelly Clay (Sacramento, Calif.) and Mandy Urhan (Dupo). The same duo of Clay and Uhrhan followed up in the fifth with RBI singles.
         After defeating Southern Indiana, SIUE had to wait for its next opponent -- Missouri-St. Louis, who lost a 1-0 thriller to No. 1 seed Lewis.
         UMSL took the early lead on SIUE 2-0 after four innings off SIUE starter Dawn Farmer. After UMSL's Christy Langenbacher led off the fifth with a single to center field, SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery went to the bullpen for Koenig.
         Koenig shut down UMSL not only in the fifth but also allowed just two hits over three innings of work.
         SIUE exploded for five runs in the fifth inning. All of the runs were unearned after a pair of UMSL miscues.
