ST. LOUIS - Mike Ngonyani (Bloomington, Ind.) scored with less than seven minutes left as Southern Illinois University downed Bellarmine 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.
         SIUE, 11-4-2, now advances to Saturday's semifinals in Romeoville to face Wisconsin-Parkside. The seventh-seeded Rangers, 11-6-1, pulled off a 5-0 upset over second-seeded Missouri-St. Louis in the quarterfinals.
         Ngonyani lifted the Cougars for the second straight game and the sixth time this season with the game-winning goal coming off a free kick at 83:16 past Bellarmine goalkeeper Brad Lipe. It was Ngonyani's team-leading 12th goal of the season.
         Ngonyani had six of SIUE's shots as the Cougars outshot the Knights 24-4. Yuzuru Takami (Japan) led SIUE with seven shots.
         Bellarmine got off to an early lead with a score from Travis Jones at 16:51 with an assist from Matt Kaestner.
         The Cougars couldn't connect until 42:59 when Josh Hickam (Granite City) scored from 10 yards out unassisted as SIUE went into halftime even at 1-1.
         SIUE heads to Romeoville, the home of GLVC Tournament No. 1 seed Lewis, hoping to win the GLVC title which eluded them last season en route to the national semifinals appearance. Last season, Lewis won the GLVC title but later lost to the Cougars in the NCAA Tournament.
         The Cougars' next conern, however, will be a hot Wisconsin-Parkside team which throttled Missouri-St. Louis and heads into the next round having won five of its last seven contests.
