Tim Velten and Addae Rique each scored and Bret Richardson made eight saves as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team topped the visiting Lewis Flyers 2-0 Monday evening at Korte Stadium.
         With the victory, SIUE secured the No. 1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament. It will have a bye in the quarterfinal round and will play host to the conference semifinals and finals on Nov. 7 and 9, respectively.
         The 11th ranked Cougars finish the regular season with a 15-2 overall record and perfect 10-0 record in conference play. SIUE is the first team since the 1996 Lewis Flyers to finish GLVC play undefeated.
         Velten got the Cougars on the board in the 28th minute on a rebound goal from Victor Pacheco's free kick.
         Rique gave the Cougars an insurance goal when he scored on a breakaway with 35 seconds left in the game. Cal Thomas was credited with an assist on the play.
         Meanwhile, Richardson was steady in goal. Five of his eight saves came in the second half, including a few crucial saves in the waning moments of the contest.
         The Cougars' GLVC semifinal round opponent will be the winner of the Quincy/Wisconsin-Parkside matchup, which will be played Sunday in Kenosha, Wis.
