KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - For Michael Burgund (Bethalto), it's going to be a day he'll remember for the rest of his life.
Despite having three teeth knocked out in the second half by his own goalkeeper on a corner kick, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville junior came back into the game for the game-winning penalty kick as the Cougars defeated Rockhurst in the first round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championships.
The Cougars, ranked 13th in the final regular season poll, advance to the second round of the 24-team NCAA Championships to play undefeated and No. 2-ranked Truman State in a 1 p.m. game in Kirksville, Mo., on Saturday. Truman State defeated SIUE 1-0 in the first game of the season on a neutral field.
SIUE, who tied Rockhurst 1-1, had Thursday's first-round game decided on penalty kicks, winning 5-3 behind Burgund's game-winner.
Coach Ed Huneke said he questioned his decision to put Burgund, who did not play the last 30 minutes of regulation and any of the overtime periods, back in the game.
"In practice we keep track of penalty kicks, and he is one of the better ones," said Huneke. "He was a little flustered, but he came through."
Burgund was not the only player hurt for the Cougars. SIUE goalkeeper Bret Richardson had his gloved ripped and his hand gashed presumably by Burgund's teeth. Play was stopped nearly 15 minutes while Richardson had a chance to get bandaged and Burgund was taken off the field.
Richardson had just four saves in the game, including a pair of game-saving swipes in overtime.
Addae Rique (Trinidad & Tobago) scored SIUE's only goal at 14:46 as he beat his defender in the box from 18 yards out. Rique has either scored or recorded an assist in SIUE's 16 victories and now first tie. When Rique does not score, the Cougars are 0-3.
Rockhurst, 10-8-2, scored its only goal at 61:39 as Joe Burns scored off a rebound in front of the goal.
Huneke said Rockhurst was scrappy and may have had something to prove after SIUE previously defeated the Hawks 4-0.
"I though we outplayed them in the first half when we had the wind, and they outplayed us with the wind at their back," said Huneke. "When you have close teams, every little thing makes a difference."
In the penalty kicks, SIUE made its first three shots easily from Victor Pacheco, Rique, and Cal Thomas. After Richardson had stopped a Rockhurst shot, sophomore Tim Velten took a shot and was stopped. However, referee Ed Braun gave Velten another attempt when it was determined that Rockhurst goalkeeper Adrian Winnubst had moved too early.
Velten connected on his second attempt, setting it up for the eventual game-winner from Burgund.
