SIUE Crowned GLVC Champion

          For the second time in the last three years, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team is the Great Lakes Valley Conference champion.
          The top-seeded Cougars took the crown by shutting out third-seeded Lewis 2-0 in the finals on Sunday at Korte Stadium.
          SIUE, 16-2-2, now awaits word of a bid to the NCAA Tournament on Monday. The Cougars figure to be one of the top three teams in the region to grab one of the 24 national tournament bids.
          SIUE's Adam Lanter gave SIUE a 1-0 lead at the 52:14 mark with his fourth game-winning goal of the year. His shot was unassisted from 18 yards out.
          "The most important thing Adam did was to not rush his shot," said SIUE Coach Ed Huneke. "He did a lot of great things today, but it was the scoring that deserves special recognition."
          Sophomore Mike Banner netted an insurance goal with 11:40 left on an assist from Brian Higgins.
          Nicholas Frasca earned the shutout in goal for the Cougars, collecting six saves. "Nick did a good job playing up high. It was difficult for him with the wind today," said Huneke.
          It was the 12th shutout of the season for the Cougars, tying a school record set in the 1973 season. Huneke said it's a special accomplishment for the 2004 team to be in same company as many of the great SIUE teams of the past.
          "This team has been a very responsive team. It's nice to see them being rewarded for it," said Huneke.
          It also was the fourth consecutive appearance for the Cougars in the GLVC title game. Lewis had won twice previously. SIUE evened up that conference title game series with Sunday's win.
          SIUE outshot Lewis 19-11. Lewis is now 16-3-2 overall.
