Cougars Hold Off UMSL 56-53

         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - Tanya Guell led SIUE with 15 points as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville upended Missouri-St. Louis 56-53 in women's Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball action Thursday night.
         Both teams struggled from the field in the game. It was SIUE that took control from the free throw line late as Julianne McMillen hit a pair of free throws with 49 seconds left and Amber Wisdom hit the back end of a two-shot free throw that made the difference in the game. SIUE didn't hit a basket in the final 2:17 of the game while UMSL couldn't connect for the final 3:50 of the game.
         SIUE evens its overall record at 3-3 as well as its GLVC record at 1-1. UMSL falls to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the GLVC.
         The Cougars led at halftime 24-23 as both team struggled from the field. UMSL did hot 4 of 9 shots from three-point range to keep the game close. There were 11 lead changes overall.
         SIUE picked up 11 points from Lindy Carey, who also tied McMillen for the team lead in rebounds with seven.
         The Riverwomen picked up 15 points from Courtney Watts, all of which were on three-pointers. Abbie Thomas added 12 points, again all on three-pointers.
         The Cougars are back in action on Saturday when they play host to Southern Indiana in a 1 p.m. game at the Vadalabene Center.
