EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Top-seeded Quincy University used a key defensive play by Edwardsville native Lindsay Anderson in the final seconds Thursday night to hold off eighth-seeded Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 53-49, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at Roberts Stadium.
         Quincy held a 49-47 lead with 15 seconds remaining, and SIUE's Amber Wisdom attempted to drive to the basket. Anderson, though, stole the ball from Wisdom and was fouled. Anderson converted one free throw to extend Quincy's lead to 52-49.
         SIUE had a final chance to send the game into overtime, but Sara Unterbrink's 3-point attempt was short. SIUE fouled Courtney VonderHaar with 0.1 seconds left on the clock, and she made one free throw for the 53-49 final score.
         Jessica Stuckman led Quincy (24-4) with 13 points, and Lisa Farrell added 12 points. Farrell also hit a key jumper with 1:31 left to give Quincy a 51-49 lead.
         Tanya Guell led SIUE (11-17) with 19 points, and Jessica Robert finished with 10 points. The Cougars rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half and took a 47-45 lead on Robert's 3-pointer with 5:45 remaining in the game.
         Quincy, however, held SIUE to just two points in the final five minutes and escaped the Cougars' bid to become the first No. 8 seed to ever win a game in the GLVC Tournament.
         Quincy will meet fifth-seeded Southern Indiana on Saturday in the GLVC Tournament semifinals.
