Pete Cacciatore (St. Louis) scored the game winner with just more than a minute left in the second overtime period as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Christian Brothers 2-1 on Sunday.
Cacciatore picked up the ball at the top of the box and punched it into the left side of the goal with 1:07 left on the clock in the second overtime period. John Matthews (Edwardsville) provided the game-winning assist for the second straight game.
SIUE, ranked No. 18 in theg nation in the NSCAA NCAA Division II preseason poll, improved to 2-0 with the victory while Christian Brothers fell to 0-1.
The Cougars dominated the Buccaneers in shots with a 24-7 advantage although Christian Brothers had a 4-3 shot advantage in the first half.
Both teams were tied 0-0 at halftime, playing most of the game in the middle third of the field. CBU's Kevin Walsh hit the cross bar just 2:42 into the game.
While Walsh could have been the hero, a yellow card at 72:19 and second yellow card at 77:03 disqualified him from the game.
Christian Brothers scored first as Harry Murphy slipped one past SIUE goalkeeper Greg Crook at 72:55.
Pressing but in control, SIUE's Adam Lanter (Edwardsville) scored the game-tying goal at 84:17 from 15 yards out on an assist by Kevin Thibodeau (St. Charles, Mo.)
The Cougars accumulated 15 shots in the second half and three in each of the overtime periods. It wasn't until 108:53 that Cacciatore picked up the game-winner past CBU goalkeeper Marvin Hypolite.
SIUE now heads to Kenosha, Wis., for the UW-Parkside PUMA Classic. The Cougars will face regional rivals Gannon on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Findlay on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
