KENOSHA, Wis. -- J.B. Jones hit the game-winning shot with two seconds left as 11th-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 66-64 in men's college basketball action on Thursday.
Jones, a freshman from Belleville West, scored a career-high 24 points, including SIUE's final nine points of the game.
SIUE had to come from behind to defeat the Rangers, who fell to 7-14 overall and 4-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
SIUE improved to 18-4 overall and remained in first place in the GLVC with Southern Indiana with an 11-2 mark.
The Cougars fell behind 37-32 at halftime and took out a hot-shooting UW-Parkside team which shot 54.2 percent for the game, including 65 percent in the second half.
UW-Parkside led by as many as 11 points in the second half with 10:41 to play.
When UWP led 52-42 with 8:38 to play, SIUE turned up the pressure with a 10-0 run to even the score at 52-52.
The Rangers fought back with a 7-0 run to lead at 59-52 with 4:31 to play on a layup by Joe Czechowicz.
Joel Jaye, who scored 15 points, led the Cougars back with a three-pointer and a layup, cutting the UWP lead to 59-57 with 3:55 to play.
That's when J.B. Jones took over.
Jones stole the ball from UWP's Kyle Clark with 2:54 to play and seconds later nailed a three-pointer to give SIUE a 60-59 lead, its first lead of the second half.
Jones gave SIUE a three-point lead less than a minute later on a mid-range jumper.
The two teams then exchanged turnovers. Gareth Malkowski, who led UWP scoring with 13 points, pulled the Rangers within one with a layup with 28 seconds left.
UWP fouled J.B. Jones with 20 seconds left. Jones hit both of his free throws, giving SIUE a 64-61 lead.
UWP fans were cheering as Tyrone Deacon tied the game with nine seconds left on a three-pointer, but the Ranger fans left DeSimone Gymnasium displeased when Jones hit the final game-winner with two seconds left.
SIUE has Friday off before heading to Romeoville to take on Lewis. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
