KENOSHA, Wis. - Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) hit three three-pointers to break the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball single-season record on Thursday. However, the Cougars lost at UW-Parkside 79-57.
Sykes now has 58 three-pointers, breaking the record of 57 set by Terri Evans in the 1995-1996 season. Sykes, who already is No. 10 on the all-time three-pointers list at SIUE, will have several more opportunities this season to inflate the record as the Cougars have seven more regular season games left beginning with Lewis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Cougars could not out-match the UW-Parkside offensive firepower of Carrie Weir and Carrie Schieve, who led all scorers with 18 points each.
UW-Parkside led from start to finish Thursday. The Rangers improved to 16-8 overall and 10-4 in the GLVC. The SIUE loss evens the season series with Rangers as the Cougars earlier defeated the Rangers 62-56 at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE fell to 10-12 overall and 5-8 in the GLVC.
Julianne McMillen led SIUE with 14 points followed by Sykes wth 13.
The Rangers hurt the Cougars in two areas -- rebounds and turnovers. UW-Parkside outrebounded SIUE 36-24 and collected 19 offensive rebounds. SIUE committed 20 turnovers, which results in 28 points off turnovers for the Rangers.
