Cougars Defeat Gannon 4-3

         HIGHLAND HTS., Ky. - No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville took advantage of two Gannon errors and came back for a 4-3 victory in its opening game of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Softball Tournament.
         The Cougars improved to 41-13 for the season and next meets No. 1-ranked Northern Kentucky and undefeated (51-0) in the winner's bracket of the six-team NCAA Regional. The two Great Lakes Valley Conference foes did not meet during the regular season due to a rainout and also did not face each other in the GLVC Tournament.
         The winner of Friday's 3 p.m. game will move on to the tournament finals. The loser of the game comes back on Saturday in an elimination game.
         On Thursday, the Cougars were down 2-0 in the second on RBI singles from Gannon's Allison Gerger and Kristen Domian.
         SIUE edged back in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Amy Rogers, scoring Veronica Schmidt.
         After Charity Sharp singled home a run in the fifth, SIUE tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Alicia DeShasier drove home Samantha Easterley on another sacrifice fly. Holly Neuerburg followed with a double to left center. With an aggresive play, Neuerburg stole third and then scored as Gannon catcher Rae Ann D'Aurora's throw ended up in left field.
         SIUE took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Schmidt singled through the left side of the infield and then stolen second. Emily Lenart singled into left field. Schmidt scored when Sharp misplayed the hit in left field.
        
Lindsey Laas went the distance for the Cougars and improved her season record to 19-6.
