Cougars Eliminated from GLVC Tourney

         EAST PEORIA, Ill. - No. 15-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville gained its 40th victory on Friday at the Great Lakes Valley Conference softball tournament.
         However, the Cougars dropped its next two games and was eliminated from the tournament. SIUE defeated Quincy 4-0 and then fell to UW-Parkside 6-2 and Southern Indiana 2-1.
         Freshman pitcher Lindsey Laas (Frankfort) tossed a four-hit shutout against Quincy. She struck out one and walked one.
         SIUE stolen seven bases against the Hawks, including three by Shanna Waldo (Peoria). Waldo leads the GLVC with 43 stolen bases. The Cougars also took advantage of three Quincy errors.
         The Cougars dropped a third straight game to UW-Parkside this season with a 6-2 loss in the winner's bracket. UWP third baseman Mel Strohbusch gathered five runs batted in, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning.
         In the elimination game, Ashley Price picked up a pair of hits and drive home SIUE's lone run in the second inning. Pinch hitter Kristy Groves singled hom the eventual winning run in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded single.
         SIUE now awaits word on its spot in the NCAA Tournament, which would be a sixth consecutive appearance by the Cougars. The top six teams in the Great Lakes region advance to the regional tournament. The full NCAA bracket consists of 48 teams.
