Cougars Frustrate UMSL 69-40

         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's defense held Missouri-St. Louis to 25.9 percent shooting in a 69-40 women's basketball victory on Thursday at the Vadalabene Center.
         With the win, SIUE returned to the .500 mark at 8-8 overall. SIUE is now 2-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. UMSL dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the GLVC.
         The Cougars wasted little time in grabbing a lead midway through the first half with a 14-0 run. UMSL was held scoreless for a period of nearly nine minutes in the first half.
         Alisa Carrillo and Alison Fogle led all scorers with 15 points. Carrillo shot 7 for 8 in the game and is shooting nearly 89 percent from the field over her last three games. Fogle hit four three-pointers and tied Becky Tenholder for the team lead in rebounds with six.
         SIUE led 36-14 and showed no signs of allowing the lead to go away. Eleven different players scored for the Cougars in the game. Julianne McMillen was the only other player in double figures with 10.
         Taylor Gagliano provided the only offensive highlights for the Riverwomen with 11 points.
         SIUE next faces Missouri-Rolla on Saturday. Tip-off time is 1 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center.
