EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball won its home opener Saturday despite a sluggish shooting performance in the second half.
SIUE, 1-1 and ranked No. 3 in the nation during the preseason by Street and Smith, defeated Harris-Stowe 63-56 at the Vadalabene Center.
The Cougars shot 7 of 29 for 24.1 percent in the second half. SIUE took a 38-25 lead to the locker room at halftime but watched the lead slowly evaporate for most of the second half.
Harris-Stowe, 2-5, cut SIUE's lead to two points at 56-54 with 2:05 to play, but the Cougars finished out the final two minutes with a 7-2 edge, including free throws from Ty Johnson and Mike Hardiek in the final 17 seconds of the game.
