         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville used a 16-6 run to start the second half to defeat Bellarmine 54-44 Thursday night in men's Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball.
         The Cougars improved to 3-2 overall after its first GLVC game of the season. Bellarmine evened its record at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC.
         The Cougars had to battle back from a slow start in the first half. SIUE was down by seven but went into the locker room with a 24-24 tie. The two teams exchanged baskets to start the second half, but SIUE pulled ahead 38-28 on a 10-0 capped off by a layup from Ty Johnson, who the Cougars in scoring with 14 points.
         Both teams struggled from the field. SIUE hit 39.6 percent of its shots and were just 2 of 10 from three-point range. Bellarmine posted even lower numbers with 34 percent shooting and 10 percent (2 of 20) from beyond the arc.
         J.B. Jones was the only other Cougar in double figures scoring with 10 points, shooting 5 of 11 from the field. Mike Hardiek missed a double-double by one point by scoring nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
         Marcus Flynn totalled 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Knights in spite of an 0-for-6 effort from three-point range.
         SIUE next heads to Northern Kentucky for a 3:15 p.m. game Saturday in Highland Heights, Ky.
