Cougars Drop Game in Overtime

         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville had its three-game winning streak halted Saturday with an 81-80 overtime loss at Kentucky Wesleyan.
         In the non-conference matchup between the two Great Lakes Valley Conference rivals, the Cougars, now 6-4 overall, fell prey to foul trouble but nearly had a chance to continue the game because of a mixup on timeouts.
         Down by two points with 0.5 seconds left, Kentucky Wesleyan called a timeout with none left to take, resulting in a two-shot technical foul. SIUE's J.B. Jones made the first shot but rimmed out the second.
         The two teams held double-digit leads in the game. SIUE led early by 14 points in the first half. Kentucky Wesleyan climbed back to a 33-30 lead by halftime and went on to a 10-point lead by the 14:20 mark of the second half.
         Mike Hardiek, who led all scorers with 28 points, hit the shot that would send the game into overtime tied 67-67.
         After Doug Taylor had fouled out in regulation, Kentucky Wesleyan chipped away at SIUE's front-court defense in the overtime period as Hardiek and Clint Burris each collected a fifth foul.
         Kentucky Wesleyan needed a 21-point, 10-rebound performance from Jeff Fahnbulleh off the bench to edged the Cougars. Rodney Edgerson and Donte Williams added 15 points each for the Panther, which improved to 5-3 and ended a three-game losing streak.
         Nick Arth scored 17 points for the Cougars while Burris added 11 points off the bench. SIUE hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game, including 4 of 4 from Hardiek.
         SIUE returns to the Vadalabene Center Thursday for a 5 p.m. game against Illinois Tech.
