HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Northern Kentucky used the three-pointer as a weapon Saturday in an 81-76 victory over No. 21-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at Regents Hall.
The Norse rained three-pointers on the Cougars, hitting 11 of 21 from beyond the arc. Northern Kentucky, 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, hit eight of its three-pointers by halftime when it led 45-34.
SIUE, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, recorded the same number of field goals (23) and free throws (24) but couldn't match the Norse's totals from three-point range.
Northern Kentucky took advantage of SIUE on the boards, winning the battle 31-21. NKU recorded a 14-2 advantage on second-chance points off its 10 offensive rebounds. SIUE had just one offensive board against the Norse.
Ty Johnson led four SIUE players in double figures with 21 points. Nick Arth scored 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. J.B. Jones and Mike Hardiek added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Steven Wright showed the way for the Norse with 29 points, including 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
The two teams were tied 25-25 in the first half, but an 18-4 run late provided the early distance between the two teams.
NKU held an 11-point lead at halftime but surrendered the lead when Ty Johnson put the Cougars ahead 57-56 with 9:10 to play in the game.
It would be SIUE's last lead in the contest. A layup by Wright at 8:32 put the Norse back in control. A three-pointer by Vincent Humphrey put the Norse ahead by seven with 1:26 to play. Northern Kentucky hit its final six free throws in the last 40 seconds of the game to secure the win.
SIUE's next action is Monday at the Vadalabene Center as the Cougars take on the Central Bible Spartans in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
