SIUE Pounces On The Spartans

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The No. 21-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball team thumped the Central Bible Spartans 80-40 Monday night.
         The Cougars' strong defense was a big factor in the win. SIUE force the Spartans into 41 turnovers. SIUE, 4-3, scored 47 points off turnovers.
         J.B. Jones led the Cougars' defensive stand with five steals, followed by Nick Arth's four steals and three others with two steals each.
         Along with his four steals SIUE's Arth had 15 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.
         The Cougars were led offensively by Mike Hardiek's 17 points.
         After a slow shooting first half the Cougars shot 60 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 45.6 percent overall.
         The Spartans, now 4-9, were led by Nathan Schwartz, who scored 11 points and Aaron Lane who added 10 points.
         SIUE returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday as it faces UW-Parkside at the Vadalabene Center. Tip-off time is 7:30 p.m.
