EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Anthony Jones came off the bench for a season-high 14 points as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated UW-Parkside 66-62 in Great Lakes Valley Conference men's basketball Thursday at the Vadalabene Center.
SIUE improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UWP dropped to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the GLVC.
Nick Arth led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points off 7-of-10 shooting. Ty Johnson added 11 points and five assists.
But it was the play of Anthony Jones which lifted the Cougars Thursday. Jones hit a pair of three-pointers, one in each half to keep SIUE in the game.
Tied 34-34 at halftme, the Rangers threatened to open up the game in the second half on back-to-back three-pointers from LaVontay Fenderson and Kyle Clark midway through the second half. UW-Parkside's six-point lead would be its biggest as SIUE found back and took the lead 58-57 on a dribble penetration jumper in the paint from Ty Johnson with 6:00 left to play.
Johnson followed up with another jumper less than a minute later, extending the lead to 60-57.
After a free throw from Arth, SIUE's Johnson and UWP's Clark traded baskets giving SIUE a 63-59 lead. Fenderson then hit his third three-pointer of the night to cut the lead to one with 2:51 to play.
Arth answered with a jumper at 1:40, giving SIUE a three-point lead. Clark had a chance to put the Rangers closer but missed the front end of a one-and-one. UWP shot just 1 of 4 from the free throw line.
Both teams missed key shots in the final 90 seconds, but a free throw by Johnson with 0.4 seconds left would put the game out of reach.
SIUE next faces Lewis in a 3 p.m. game Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
