Cougars Lose Overtime Heartbreaker

EDWARDSVILLE -- Senior Alisa Carrillo netted a team-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville fell to Southern Indiana 76-68 in overtime Saturday at the Vadalabene Center.
         Southern Indiana's Jasmine Baines scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting going 9-9 from the free throw line.
         Carrillo went 6 of 10 from the field and 6 of 8 from the charity stripe. Carrillo has gone 15 for 19 from the field the last two games.
         The Cougars drop to 12-13 overall and 6-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Screaming Eagles improve to 15-13 overall and 7-10 in the league.
         SIUE ran out to a 20-4 lead with 10:30 to in the first half. Southern Indiana finished the half on a 33-10 run capped by a Keisha Collins jumper that made it 37-30 at the break.
         SIUE gained a 44-34 advantage on a pair of Deidra Dace free throw with 17:09 left in the contest. Katie Thiesenhusen's three-pointer capped a 25-6 run that gave the Screaming Eagles a 59-50 lead with 5:29 remaining.
         The Cougars battled back as Allison Fogle hit a running layup to tie the game at 64 with :07 left to send the game to overtime.
         The Screaming Eagles outscored the Cougars 12-4 in the extra session. SIUE went 2-8 from the free throw line in overtime, while USI was 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.
         Whitney Sykes netted 13 points. Julianne McMillen notched nine points and grabbed seven rebounds. Fogle, Amy Austin, and Deidra Dace each scored eight points in the game.
         The Cougars shot 43.8 percent (21-48) from the field in the game and the Screaming Eagles netted 46.4 percent (25-56) of their shots from the field.
         The Cougars will be back in action next Thursday as Rockhurst visits the Vadalabene Center at 5:30 p.m.
