EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Quincy University used a balanced scoring attack and stingy defense to knock off Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 63-57 Saturday night in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Basketball Tournament in Roberts Stadium.
Ryan Walker paced Quincy with 15 points, while teammate Cameron Murkey added 13 points and a GLVC Tournament record-tying 17 rebounds. Murkey's 17 boards tied the record set by Kentucky Wesleyan's Antonio Garcia in 1998.
Jordan Roth and Andre Muse each netted 10 points for the Hawks, who improved to 21-8 and advanced to the GLVC Tournament game for the first time in history.
Ty Johnson led SIUE, 22-7, with 19 points. The Cougars shot just 37 percent from the field in both halves and were beaten on the boards by a 43-27 margin.
"Detail-wise we just weren't sharp enough when you play a team like this," said SIUE Coach Marty Simmons.
SIUE scored the first five points of the game and then QUincy turned up the pressure by outscoring SIUE 17-2 over the next seven minutes of the game. SIUE closed the lead to within six points at 32-26 by halftime.
The Cougars only were able to close the gap to within one point when Anthony Jones nailed a three-pointer with 1:07 left to play.
Quincy then hit 9 of 10 free throws in the last 31 seconds of the game to hold off SIUE's run.
J.B. Jones added 11 points for SIUE, which is ranked seventh in the latest Great Lakes Region poll. The Cougars are expected to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Quincy will meet the Saint Joseph's/Drury winner for the GLVC championship at 3:30 p.m. Sunday for the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
