EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Sabra McCune tossed a pair of shutouts against Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville advanced to the Great Lakes Regional title game in the NCAA Softball Tournament.
The top-seeded Cougars defeated the No. 3 seed Screaming Eagles 9-0 in five innings before blanking the Norse 8-0 in six innings. SIUE battles fifth-seeded Northern Kentucky tomorrow for the regional title at 1 p.m. at Cougar Field. The winner advances to play in the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Salem, Va., from May 18-22. Monday's game can be heard live on SIUE's WebRadio at http://www.siue.edu/WEBRADIO.
Fourth-ranked SIUE has tied the school record for wins in a season, moving to 51-9 on the year. The Norse, who have represented the Great Lakes Region in the last two seasons at the NCAA Finals, fall to 41-20 on the year.
McCune, now 32-7, set a new SIUE single-season record by notching a pair of wins as she passes Sandy Montgomery, who as a student-athlete in 1985 went 30-8. McCune gave up six hits with 13 strikeouts, allowing one walk in the two games. As a batter, McCune also collected three RBIs and a pair of doubles.
SIUE gained a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Southern Indiana on an RBI triple by Alicia DeShasier that scored Shanna Waldo. DeShasier would score one batter later on a sacrifice bunt by Libby Lenart.
The Cougars broke open the game in the second inning scoring five runs with two outs. DeShasier hammered a three-run double off the center field fence. Libby Lenart and McCune followed with RBI doubles to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, pinch hitter Casey Wantland delivered a two-run single making it a 9-0 game.
SIUE took a 1-0 lead against Northern Kentucky on a two-out RBI single by Amy Rogers in the second inning. The Cougars added a pair of runs in the fourth inning. After back-to-back doubles from Libby Lenart and McCune, Jodie Ohlau laced a RBI single to left field for a 3-0 advantage.
The Cougars put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Ohlau notched another RBI single, and Kaeleigh Rousey and DeShasier each had RBI doubles in the inning.
Libby Lenart was 4-5 with three doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs in both games. DeShasier went 4-6 with five RBIs and four runs scored in the two games. The SIUE right fielder is 8-13 with 13 RBIs in the last four games. Shanna Waldo was 4-7 with three runs scored on the day.
