SIUE Ousted From NCAA's

         SALEM, Va. -- Central Oklahoma tossed a shutout to eliminate Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from the NCAA Division II Softball Finals at the Moyer Complex.
         The Cougars completed their season with a 52-11 record in its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Finals as the Great Lakes Region champion. Central Oklahoma, which threw its ninth shutout of the season, improved to 31-16 and will play the loser of the Florida Southern-Emporia State game.
         Central Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Lindsay Tripp, a hit that would prove to be the game-winner. The Bronchos added to their lead with a solo home run by catcher Emilee Bounds in the sixth inning. The home run was hit to right field over the head of SIUE right fielder Alicia DeShasier, who knocked over the break-away, plastic fencing surrounding the outfield while trying to make the catch.
         The Cougars had a leadoff hit in only the fifth inning when Emily Lenart rapped a ground-rule double over the right field fence. Central Oklahoma pitchers Alli Blake and Jordan Akin held SIUE to five hits. Blake tossed the first five innings and Akin recorded her first save of the season with the final two innings of work.
         The Bronchos finished with nine hits off Sabra McCune, who finished the season with a 33-9 record. McCune broke the SIUE record for wins a season and strikeouts with 301.
         SIUE ended its season with a school-record 52 victories. SIUE completed the year with some of its best all-time offensive and pitching numbers. The 2006 Cougars broke the record for stolen bases with 188 and were among the top five in batting average (.310), runs scored (316), walks (214), and runs batted in (267). In pitching, SIUE broke the single-season record for strikeouts (420).
