         ST. LOUIS, MO. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville held off a late charge Saturday, handing Missouri-St. Louis a 70-68 defeat at the Mark Twain Building.
         SIUE improved to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and remained in a tie for first place in the West Division with Quincy, which defeated Missouri-Rolla 86-79 Saturday to join SIUE in the lead.Missouri-St. Louis dropped below .500 to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC.
         Mike Hardiek, who pumped in four three-pointers, led the offense for the Cougars with 22 points. J.B. Jones scored 17 points and Nick Arth added 14.
         Tied 30-30 at halftime, SIUE raced to a double-digit lead in the second half. Leading by 13 with 6:11 to go, UMSL rallied for 17-5 run over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 69-68. After a foul with 16 seconds left, SIUE's Anthony Jones missed the front end of a two-shot foul and then drained the second shot.
         Needing a two-pointer to tie or a three-pointer for the win, UMSL went to Troy Slaten who missed two shots as time elapsed.
         David Ward and Brett Ledbetter each scored 20 points for the Rivermen. Ward's 20 was a career high. Slaten added 11 points off the bench.
         SIUE returns to action Thursday against nationally-ranked Southern Indiana at the Vadalabene Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
