Cougars Ousted on Penalty Kicks

Box Score

October 28, 2007

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Anything can happen with penalty kicks.
That's what Southern Illinois University Edwardsville found out Sunday as the men's soccer team was eleiminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament by Indianapolis. The Greyhounds edged SIUE 10-9 in penalty kicks after the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie.
Neither SIUE goalkeeper Greg Crook or Indianapolis goalie Michael Crane blinked during the regular 90 minutes and the 20 minutes of overtime. Crook finished with five saves while Crane had six.
While the game goes into the record books as a tie, one team had to advance in the tournament. The two teams were 4-4 after the first five rounds. Indianapolis hit eight shots in a row, including the eventual successful score by Crane in the 11th round.
SIUE, now 10-3-3, doubled up Indianapolis, 11-5-5 overall, in shots 14-7 but could not find the back of the net. Adam Lanter led SIUE with three shots. Brian Fishback paced the Greyhounds with four shots.
SIUE Coach Ed Huneke and the No. 21-ranked Cougars will now have more than a week to await their fate for the NCAA Tournament. SIUE was the No. 2 pick in the Great Lakes Region heading into this weekend's play. The top four teams in the Great Lakes Region earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
