EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Despite a double-double from Amber Shelton, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team took its first Great Lakes Valley Conference loss Saturday.
         The Cougars, now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC, picked up a 33-point, 10-rebound effort from its senior forward. Shelton shot 9 of 20 from the field with one three-pointer as well as 14 of 17 from the free throw line.
         Northern Kentucky, 3-1 and 1-1 in the GLVC, put a damper on Misi Clark Day in which the Cougars retired the No. 3 jersey of the former three-time All-American at halfime of the SIUE men's game.
         SIUE shot 35 percent from the field and just 2 of 10 from three-point range.
         The Cougars fell behind 45-29 at halftime but battled back to within four points at 61-57 with 6:34 left. SIUE went on a 16-2 run midway through the half to get back into the contest.
         Northern Kentucky held SIUE at bay the rest of the game. Jessie Slack led the norse with 20 points while Cassie Brannen and Angela Healy scored 14 each.
         Jessie Stapleton was SIUE's only other player in double figures with 10 points.
         SIUE returns to action Wednesday when it plays host to Robert Morris for a 7 p.m. contest at the Vadalabene Center.
