Shelton, Cougars Chop Up Oaks

         OAKLAND CITY, Ind. -- Amber Shelton scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds Saturday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville collected a 66-55 road victory at Oakland City in women's college basketball action.
         The win lifted SIUE's record to 6-2. SIUE coach Wendy Hedberg and her team were competing in their first game in 10 days. The Cougars' defense didn't show any signs of letdown, holding Oakland City to 34 percent shooting for the game.
         Shelton turned in her second double-double of the season, shooting 8 of 16 from the field with one three-pointer. The senior forward recorded one-third of SIUE's rebounds as the Cougars outrebounded the Oaks 42-32.
         Shelton was the only Cougar scoring in double figures. However, Jessie Stapleton and Laura Witherspoon both were perfect from the field off the bench. Stapleton hit four shots to Witherspoon's three.
         Karissa Walter paced Oakland City with 21 points while Jesse Oxley added 15 points. SIUE's depth was too much for the Oaks as the Cougars outscored them 23-4.
         The Cougars return to the home pine Wednesday for another non-conference matchup. SIUE entertains Illinois-Springfield in a 5:30 p.m. game at the Vadalabene Center.
