EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- J.B. Jones (Belleville) became the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 career points Wednesday in helping Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a 58-48 victory over Truman State in men's college basketball action.
Jones led all scorers with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The senior guard, who is SIUE's all-time leader in assists and steals, scored his 1,000th point on a jumper from 17 feet out just behind the free throw line with 3:50 to go in the first half.
SIUE improved to 5-3 on the season with its third straight victory. The Cougars will try to make it four straight Friday when they entertain Trinity International in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the Vadalabene Center.
The Cougars fell behind early, hitting just three of their first 13 shots from the field. Truman State, now 1-8, raced to 16-4 lead before SIUE got started offensively. SIUE used a 17-4 run of its own in the middle of the first half not only to recover but also take a one-point lead at 23-22 with 3:16 left.
SIUE took a six-point lead by halftime and did not look back. Truman State, who was led by 13 points from Nick Certa, only came within five points of the Cougars in the second half.
Truman State held a 39-32 advantage in rebounding, but it was SIUE's defense that again proved to be the difference. SIUE scored 20 points off Truman State's 19 turnovers. Truman State converted six points on SIUE's 14 turnovers.
