KANSAS CITY, MO. -- Overtime was unkind to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville a second time this season.
The men's basketball Cougars lost 70-64 to Rockhurst in an overtime battle. SIUE, which also lost an overtime game on Dec. 16 at Kentucky Wesleyan, sent the game into overtime when Mike Hardiek connected on a three-pointer with 36 seconds left in regulation.
SIUE, 12-11 overall and 7-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, didn't have the same fortune in overtime, hitting just 1 of 5 shots from the field in the extra period.
Hardiek, who hits 4 of 5 three-pointers in the game, led all scorers with 24 points. Nick Arth was the only other Cougar in double figures with 10 points.
Both the first half and the second half ended in ties. The game was even at 26-26 at halftime. Rockhurst led for much of the second half but didn;t close the door on the Cougars until overtime.
In the overtime period, Kevin Martin and Joey Deas hit early shots to put the Hawks ahead by four. In the end, Rockhurst made its free throws with two from Aaron Hill, who led Rockhurst in scoring with 19 points, and two from Deas.
It was Rockhurst's performance from the line that made the difference. The Hawks were a perfect 16 of 16 from the line while SIUE finished 9 of 15 from the charity stripe.
SIUE now returns home to the Vadalabene Center to face Quincy in a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Cougars have three of four games at the Vadalabene Center to close out the regular season.
