         SPRINGFIELD, MO. -- Mike Hardiek matched his career-high 32 points Thursday but the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars were outdueled by Drury 79-71.
         Hardiek hit a career-best six three-pointers and shot 10 of 14 from the field. Still, Drury matched SIUE step for step and improved to 15-7. The Cougars dropped to 12-10.
         Drury's Chris Ijames powered Drury's offense with 26 points, including five three-pointers.
         What proved to be the difference was a 13-0 run late in the first half. SIUE was up by two with 5:20 to play in the half when Steven Gum hit a three-pointer and gave Drury the lead 27-26. Ijames provided a pair of three-pointers during the run. Drury took a 40-32 lead to the locker room at halftime.
         Both teams shot well from three-point range, each hitting eight times. SIUE kept alive by hitting 23 of 26 from the free throw line.
         The Cougar defense allowed Drury to shoot 51 percent, the best shooting night for an SIUE opponent all season. SIUE entered the game No. 1 in the GLVC in opponent field goal percentage at 41.3 percent.
         SIUE must rebound Saturday on its GLVC road trip. The Cougars face off against Rockhurst at 3 p.m.
