Bellarmine Ousts Cougars from GLVC Tournament

         EVANSVILLE, IND. -- Bellarmine ousted Southern Illinois University Edwardsville from the women's Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball tournament Friday in the opening round with a 68-55 triumph.
         The Cougars, 20-8, are still looking for an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament field, which will be announced late Sunday evening. SIUE was ranked No. 5 in Great Lakes Region.
         Bellarmine, 19-9, used a balanced scoring effort to roll past the Cougars. Angela Smith led four players in double figures with 18 points for the Knights.
         The Knights kept SIUE's Whitney Sykes, a second team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection, in check, holding the junior to 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
         SIUE was 4 of 19 from three-point range (21.1 percent). SIUE also finished the game shooting 37 percent overall from the field.
         Julianne McMillen led SIUE with 19 points, hitting 9 of 16 shots. First team All-GLVC pick Amber Shelton was held to 17 points, two points less than her season average.
         Bellarmine jumped ahead of the Cougars early, leading 14-7 with 13:51 to play on a jumper by Ashley Lewallen. She finished with 14 points as did guard Denasha Mondy.
         SIUE scored the next five points on a three-pointer by Sykes and a layup by Elyse Morris. Bellarmine, however, regained control and pushed its lead to nine points by halftime.
         The Cougars stormed back early in the second half with a 12-4 run, taking a momentary lead with 14:46 to play on a layup by Sykes.
         Bellarmine's answer came just six seconds later on a three-pointer by Smith. That started a 14-4 run by the Knights and kept the Cougars at arm's distance. Bellarmine shot 45 percent from the field for the game and hit half of its three-pointers.
