Cougars Pick Up Road Win at KWC

         OWENSBORO, Ky. -- After hitting nine out of its last 10 free throws, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team went on for a 77-73 road victory at Kentucky Wesleyan.
           SIUE, 12-4 overall and 5-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, didn't need a field goal in the final six minutes Thursday. SIUE's Amber Shelton, who led all scorers with 19 points, hit SIUE's final field goal with 6:04 to play, her only three-pointer of the night.
           The Cougars turned in their strongest night from the field for the season, connecting on 56.8 percent of their shots. SIUE hit 11 of 20 in the first half and 14 of 24 in the second half.
           Kentucky Wesleyan, now 7-9 overall and 1-7 in the GLVC, kept it close by halftime, falling behind the Cougars 35-34. Whitney Waddell provided six of KWC's 13 three-pointers and scored a team-high 18 points.
           Three other Cougars followed Shelton in double figures. Elyse Morris scored a season-high 16 points. Laura Witherspoon recorded 12 points off the bench, and Whitney Sykes added 10.
           The Panthers put SIUE to the test on the free throw line down by nine with six minutes remaining. SIUE converted 23 of 28 from the line overall.
           SIUE moves just north and across to the Indiana border Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest at Southern Indiana.
