Cougars Provide Homecoming Winner

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- A crowd of 1,538 cheered Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a homecoming victory Friday night as the Cougars blanked McKendree 2-0 in men's college soccer action.
         The Cougars improved to 4-5 for the season with a pair of unassisted goals from Chris Anzalone and Jack Twellman. SIUE dominated play by outshooting its opponents 18-5.
         SIUE coach Kevin Kalish said the Cougars took their time finding gaps in the McKendree defense. Once that operation was complete, SIUE took over play.
         "Once we found lanes, we took advantage," said Kalish.
         McKendree dropped its record to 10-2-1 and couldn't find a rhythm against the Cougars. Max Stainmez led the Bearcats with three of their five shots.
         SIUE's offense pushed hard against McKendree. Anzalone struck first with a goal at 31:48. Twellman, who led all players with seven shots, tallied his goal at 71:29. Ten different players took shots in the game.
         SIUE goalkeeper Nick Frasca posted two saves and recorded his second shutout of the season.
         Kalish said the crowd energized his players. SIUE kept a well-coached McKendree team on its heels.
         "I give McKendree credit on their effort," said Kalish.
         The Cougars return to action Wednesday against Jefferson College. Game time is 7 p.m. at Korte Stadium.
