MILWAUKEE, Wis. - UW Milwaukee shot better than 53 percent from the field and used a significant rebounding advantage to defeat Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 88-65 Wednesday in women's college basketball action.
SIUE dropped to 1-4 despite a 25-point effort from Jenny Wuest. The Kenosha, Wis., native shot 9 of 20 from the field and hit 7 of 8 from the line.
SIUE Coach Amanda Levens said the Cougars shot well in the first half. SIUE hit 5 of 11 shots from three-point range in the first 20 minutes and climbed to a 39-34 lead by halftime. "We came out ready to play hard," said Levens.
Milwaukee, now 2-2, shot 58 percent in the first half but had trouble holding on to the ball. SIUE forced a season-best 33 turnovers from the Panthers.
"Obviously, we shot well in the first half. At the half, we knew Milwaukee would make adjustments," said Levens. "In the second half, we dug a hole for ourselves by not shooting well."
Milwaukee also used a 58-27 advantage in rebounding to make up for its ball-handling errors.
The Panthers tied the score within the first five minutes of the second half. Lindsay Laur hit a three-pointer 11:12 to play to put Milwaukee up by 13 points. The Panthers posted a 22-4 run to start the second half.
"We needed to start the second half stronger. We can't let our offense affect our defense," said Levens.
Along with Wuest's 25, Brittany Imig scored 13 points while Jessie Stapleton added 12. SIUE picked up 23 steals from the Panthers, including a game-high seven from Ashley Bey.
Traci Edwards posted a double-double for the Panthers with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Panther also picked up 16 points off the bench from Turquoise McCain.
Levens said the Cougars made improvements but ran into a good Horizon League team.
"This is the best team we have played so far this season," said Levens.
