EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville forced 29 turnovers on defense against Webster in capturing a 75-56 exhibition win in men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Vadalabene Center.
SIUE, 1-1 in exhibition play, now heads to the ESPN Charleston Classic for a three-day tournament beginning Nov. 14. The Cougars play host College of Charleston in the opening game of the tournament. The game can be seen on Charter Sports Southeast (CSS), a regional ESPN network.
The other six teams in the tournament include East Tennessee State, Temple, Clemson, Western Michigan, Hofstra and Texas Christian.
SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester said his team came out and played 40 minutes with intensity on Wednesday.
"We had a better defensive effort tonight," he said. "This was a good team effort."
SIUE held the lead for most of the game and led by 14 by halftime. The Cougars picked up a game-high 14 points and six steals from freshman Mark Yelovich.
Nikola Bundalo was the only other Cougar in double figures with 13 points.
Forrester continued to go deep into his bench. Webster did as well with 17 Gorloks seeing playing time in the exhibition.
Starter Ryan Turk was the team's leading scorer with 13 points followed by 12 from Luke Niebrugge.
The Cougars shot 40.7 percent (24-59) from the field and held Webster to a stingy 32.8 percent (19-58) from the field.
