COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 25-ranked Missouri Tigers turned up the pressure Saturday in a 107-57 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in men's college basketball action at Mizzou Arena.
Missouri, coming off a disappointing 16-point loss to Illinois, gave national poll voters a reason to keep in the Tigers in the top 25 with the 50-point win. Missouri's DeMarre Carroll led all players with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
SIUE, now 2-11, gave up triple digits for the first time since the 2001-2002 season when Kentucky Wesleyan collected a win. The Cougars have a seven-game losing streak heading into Sunday's 2 p.m. game at Missouri-Kansas City.
"We have to be positive with our players because we have to turn around and plan another tough team tomorrow," said SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester.
Mark Yelovich led the Cougars with 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers and seven free throws. Barry Wellington added 11 points on his 21st birthday.
The Tigers put on a shooting exhibition in the first half, shooting 60 percent from the field and 58 percent from three-point range. With seven Missouri three-pointers coupled with SIUE's 15 first-half turnovers, the Tigers jumped out to a 58-24 halftime lead. Eleven different Missouri players scored in the first 20 minutes.
SIUE scored the game's opening bucket 19 seconds into the game on a Wellington jumper. John Edmison added a three-pointer a minute later to give SIUE an early edge.
Missouri then took over by hitting six of its first seven three-pointers, led by three three-pointers from Marcus Denmon who scored 11 points. The Tigers scored 23 points off turnovers in the opening frame.
The Cougars calmed down in the second half, committing just seven turnovers.
"I thought we played much harder in the second half," said Forrester.
