KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Aaron Garriott scored a career-high 24 points as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball downed Missouri-Kansas City 77-71 Sunday at Municipal Auditorium.
It was the first true road Division I victory for the Cougars, which snapped a seven-game losing streak. SIUE, which defeated Western Michigan earlier this season in a neutral site game, improved to 3-11 while the Kangaroos fell to 5-10 overall.
SIUE shot an astounding 66 percent from the field against UMKC. Garriott was a perfect 8 of 8 from the field, including three three-pointers. Nikola Bundalo chipped in 14 points and also was a perfect 7 of 7 from the field.
"They showed great composure down the stretch. It was a good win for us," said SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester.
The Cougars collected the six-point win less than 24 hours after being handed a 50-point loss at Missouri. Forrester gave credit to his team for sticking to the game plan against the Kangaroos.
"I complement our players for bouncing back after yesterday's game," said Forrester.
UMKC was led by Dane Brumagin, who unloaded for 34 points. He shot 12 of 19 from the field.
SIUE took a 38-31 lead at halftime by turning in a strong performance from the field. The Cougars hit 16 of 24 (66.7 percent) from the field, made both of its three-point shots and converted all four of its free throws. Garriott had 10 points by halftime, perfect from the field with a two-pointer, two three-pointers and two free throws.
"He played very awesome," Forrester said of his freshman guard. "He made us a much better team today."
UMKC's downfall was its free throw shooting. While the Cougars were a perfect 11 of 1 from the line, UMKC managed just 14 of 25 for the game.
SIUE returns to action Wednesday at Southeast Missouri State in a special 5:30 p.m. start on New Year's Eve. It will be SIUE's only game against an Ohio Valley Conference opponent this season.
