NKU Downs Cougars 61-48

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Northern Kentucky hit its final six free throws of the game for a 61-48 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college basketball action at the Vadalabene Center.
         SIUE, 1-8, faced the No. 1 team in the USA Today/WBCA NCAA Division II poll and held its ground. The Cougars erased a second-half 12-point lead and took the lead midway through the second half before NKU retook control of the contest.
         SIUE's Jessie Stapleton recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Meade scored a career-high 12 points, including a pair of 24-foot three-pointers.
         "We played hard. I was very proud of the effort," said SIUE Coach Amanda Levens. "We battled for 40 minutes."
         As has been the case so far this season, SIUE's defense was swarming. The Cougars caused the Norse to make 24 turnovers in the game. SIUE finished with just 14 turnovers. SIUE's defense collected 15 steals. Ashley Bey collected seven steals to tie her season high.
         Northern Kentucky, led by 20 points and 11 boards from Jessie Slack, crashed the boards for 53 rebounds against the Cougars. Brandi Rayburn also reached double digits with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Karen Brackman also added 13 points.
         "We didn't give NKU second shots," said Levens. Both Northern Kentucky and SIUE grabbed 11 offensive rebounds.
         The Cougars' offense didn't have as good of a day as its defense. SIUE shot 27.7 percent from the field and hit 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.
         SIUE was down by five points with 3:27 to play. After both teams missed shots, Brandi Rayburn put the Norse ahead by seven with a jumper at 1:24. With the Cougars forced into sending NKU to the line, the Norse hit six a row to close out the game.
