EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville center Doug Taylor converted a pair of free throws with five seconds left to provide the margin of victory in a 59-57 triumph at Missouri-St. Louis.
It was the 12th consecutive win for SIUE over rival Missouri-St. Louis. Thursday's win also was SIUE's fifth in its last six outings. The Cougars head into Saturday's 3 p.m. game at Missouri S&T with a 13-9 record overall and a 6-8 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
SIUE held a 14-point lead early in the second half and had it completely erased in the second half when UMSL, now 8-14 and 3-11 in the GLVC, charged to a 50-46 lead with 5:44 to play on a steal and a fast break layup by Tim Green.
The Cougars battled back late and regained the lead, eventually winning it on the free throw line with two shots from J.B. Jones with 31 seconds left and the final two from Taylor with five ticks left.
Taylor's production was only from the free throw, hitting all six of his game attempts. He did not have any field goals in the game.
UMSL shut down SIUE's leading scorer T.J. Gray, who had four points and a team-best four assists. Gray entered the game averaging more than 17 points per game.
SIUE picked up its offense from senior Asa Clayborne, who led all scorers with 14 points. John Edmison and Nikola Bundalo followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Nathan Whittaker provided 13 points for the Tritons. He made just one free throw on a three-shot foul that could have tied the game with seven seconds left in regulation.
