SIUE Holds Off Missouri-St. Louis

           ST. LOUIS -- Amber Shelton scored 20 points, including two crucial free throws in the final seconds, as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Missouri-St. Louis 71-68 at the Mark Twain Building.
           SIUE improved to 15-7 overall and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Missouri-St. Louis dropped to 6-16 and 3-11.
           The Cougars held a 14-point lead in the first half and held off the Tritons at halftime, taking a 34-32 lead into the locker room. SIUE led for most of the second half with UMSL taking a brief 56-55 lead on a three-pointer by Taylor Gagliano at the 8:07 mark of the second half.
           SIUE tied the game when Shelton hit the back end of a two-shot foul with 7:57 to play.
           Whitney Sykes, who finished with 18 points, connected on a three-pointer 30 seconds later that would put SIUE ahead for good.
           Shelton, the GLVC's leading scorer, played just 22 minutes Thursday due to foul trouble but came up big in the end for the Cougars. She gave SIUE a seven-point lead with 1:35 left to play on a layup and bonus free throw. She also picked up the final two free throws of the game with seven seconds left.
           Jessie Stapleton turned another double-double with 12 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds.
           UMSL's Mary Slaugher matched Stapleton with 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.
           Both teams struggled from the free throw line in the contest. UMSL hit 61.1 percent (11-18) while SIUE finished at 53.7 percent (22-41).
           SIUE's road trip continues Saturday with a matchup in Rolla, Mo., against Missouri S&T.
